UK teams MNM and Cowana qualify for Rainbow 6 European League Relegation Playoffs

UK sides MNM Gaming and Cowana Gaming have emerged as two of the best Rainbow 6 Siege teams in the European Challenger League. Craig Robinson takes a look back at their impressive run.

MNM and Cowana fought their way through Season 1 of the newly structured Challenger League, in both the group stage and playoffs, and will now play against one another in the final on December 5th.

The winner of the series will advance to the European League, replacing the recently auto relegated Chaos E.C.

The loser of the series will then challenge Rogue for the remaining spot in the EU League for the 2021 season.

But how did they reach this spot to begin with?

The UK’s run to the final

Both Cowana and MNM Gaming were slotted into group B, which turned out to be the most competitive group of the inaugural Challenger League season.

With their success in the groups (MNM topping group B and Cowana finishing fourth), they then both advanced to the playoffs.

Here, Cowana took down Winstrike and PENTA, while MNM Gaming defeated MACKO Esports and Gamma Gaming.

Cowana came out strong, especially against PENTA, one of the strong French sides that fans expected to be a potential finalist. They showed their superiority by claiming Clubhouse 7-3 and Oregon 7-5.

While Cowana were a strong success story, MNM Gaming had a more dramatic and emotional ride. They came back from a 0-5 scoreline, to win Kafe 7-5, similarly to how their British cousins Na’Vi did against G2 Esports in late 2019.

On the final map, MNM clinched their final spot after claiming the series win in the final round of overtime. The moment peaked at some 22,782 viewers and arguably was one of the most exciting RB6 series all year.

Reality sets in

With their success, as mentioned both teams now head to the finals taking place on December 5th. The winner of the series will advance to the European League, replacing the recently auto relegated Chaos E.C, and the loser will face Rogue for the remaining spot in the EU League for the 2021 season.

With the narrative set, the UK and Ireland National League has cemented itself as one of the strongest regions in Europe, fostering teams for the European Challenger League.

Back in August, MNM’s Aku ‘Fonkers’ Seppä told us that the UK /Ireland League is the most competitive league in the Tier 3 scene, and this result confirms his opinion.

Now the question remains: which of these teams will be joining the European League in 2021?

Both MNM Gaming and Cowana are no strangers to one another, having played each other in the group stage of the Challenge League, which ended in a draw.

They also played each other in the UK finals, as MNM Gaming sent Cowana down to the Lower Bracket Finals to face Na’Vi back in August.

There’s a lot on the line, and the UK scene cannot wait for the #UKMASSIVE showdown in December.
