Riot Games Closes Sydney Office, Dissolves Oceanic Pro League – The Esports Observer|home of essential esports business news and insights

Riot Games has closed its office in Australia and dissolved the Oceanic Pro League, the company announced Wednesday. In a joint statement from Riot Games’ Managing Director of North America & Oceania Malte Wagener; and Global Esports Director of Operations Tom Martell, the company said that it had closed its Sydney office and dissolved the League of Legends league for Australia and New Zealand.

The company did not disclose how many employees were laid off or if the staff in Sydney had been shifted to other offices at the time of writing.

The statement also added that Riot has not given up on the region:

“We remain committed to supporting our pro players in the region with a path to continue their careers moving forward,” the statement noted. “Beginning with the 2021 season, we are adding OCE to the competitive territory for the LCS, so OCE players will no longer take an import slot on LCS rosters. This will open up new opportunities in North America for top OPL players. We will also hold qualifying tournaments in OCE for both MSI and Worlds in 2021, ensuring teams from the region will continue to be represented at our two major global events next season.”
