Hello Games has released some pretty big updates for its procedurally generated sci-fi universe No Man’s Sky over the years but the latest is one of the most extensive. Called No Man’s Sky Origins, the update dramatically expands the videogame adding new stars, planets, terrain, weather and so much more.
This is the 3.0 update for No Man’s Sky and the studio is giving players a greater selection of content to see and explore as they head into the stars. One of its core features is that procedural generation which can now do so much more, with existing solar systems now with brand new planets to land upon, opening up millions of possibilities.
That means these worlds will have spectacular new terrain to explore, new plants and weather systems to deal with. So keep an eye out for strange new alien wildlife roaming these locations, planets with active volcanoes, firestorms which set the ground ablaze, gravitational anomalies and tornadoes ripping across a planet’s surface.
And there’s extra stuff to do. Huge vaults will appear, filled with data, treasure, and directions to long-forgotten ruins to look for. Archive buildings can be found filled with historical stories of ancient civilisations or abandoned settlements are waiting to be discovered on dead or anomalous planets. You’ll even find planets with synthetic creatures, giant beetles buzzing overhead or worst-case scenario, colossal sandworms.
To make these scenes even more impressive Hello Games has enhanced the visual aesthetics with a wider colour palette, added more lighting conditions whilst improving the terrain detail. There’s a massive amount going on so check out the full patch notes for all the details.
Originally released in 2016, No Man’s Sky got virtual reality (VR) support in 2019, playable on Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index and PlayStation VR headsets. This was followed a few months ago with cross-platform support. As further updates are released, VRFocus will let you know.
